Welcome to Sheffield Harmony!
This is a poem by new member Ergie Baker
Love that noise, that grace and poise, that’s Sheffield Harmony…
It was down to Ringinglow
that I heard I had to go
to join some lasses with masses
of talent for a show.
Now I knew they’d got some style
so I listened for a while.
Pam was leading, really pleading
with those girls to smile.
They took me to the land of jazz.
But then they said I’d have to pass
the big audition – it was a mission
but did I have the class?
Well I took the file away
and I practised night and day.
So many things to learn anew
I hoped I’d master just a few.
Not only the music, but also the moves.
And as I’m well known for my two left hooves,
There was no way that me - or Cheryl -
could possibly keep up with Beryl.
But with Joan around, I quickly found
that it was generally wiser
not to talk whilst on the riser.
Dots & tags; ribs & throat;
posture, tune-up & keynote.
Don’t you start off on the fence,
hit that note with confidence.
Feet apart & power breathing,
stand up tall and reach the ceiling.
Bend the knees, shoulders down,
open throat – lose that frown.
Warm air rising, falling, flowing;
‘C-P-T’ & chubbies glowing.
Banish all that lassitude;
try to sing with attitude
Should there be doubt over crotchet or quaver,
consult Win in the corner, she’s sure to remember.
‘Give me five!’ Judy says, ‘then a three and a two;
somebody’s flat – Leads, is it you?’
Then all at once, after many a tear
the dread audition night was here.
I dearly hoped my dedication
would overcome my trepidation.
But yet, that dire anticipation
swiftly cured my constipation.
Tina said ‘It won’t be hellish – have a practice now with Relish’.
They were so kind. They said ‘That’s nice - Summon Pam’ and in a trice
The test was very quickly passed,
and I was one of them, at last!
So, ladies, to sum up:
You took me to the land of jazz
And you taught me a bit of that razzamatazz.
I’d like to thank you, every one,
for making Mondays so much fun.
And if you ask me who’s the cream of the crop?
Well, it’s Sheffield Ladies Barbershop!
